Film Fridays // mini sessions

film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film

I’m still working on the digital images from my family MINI SESSIONS but I HAD to share some of the film I just got back. I took mostly digital that day but snuck in a bit of film and EEEP! I do love them. I am just so crazy-obsessed-I-need-film-rehab in love with how film looks!  It’s so amazing and perfectly imperfect. The color, the texture, the depth, the richness, no blown highlights, creamy skin. It’s all there and I didn’t even have to do anything to it.

Taking my Mamyia out to the mini sessions definitely planted the seed that I want to start photographing ALL my families with film. I was (still am) nervous to shoot little ones with medium format. They are fast and it is slow and with each roll I get 15 shots. That’s it. With digital I can pop off 10-15 shots of the same pose until I have a good one. I do think it’s possible though. One of my biggest film heroes, Jonathan Canlas , takes the most amazing family photos with children of all ages on medium format. This guy has super natural abilities, though. So I’m not saying I’ll come even close to his talent, just that it’s possible. Check him out if you’ve never heard of him. His family work is inspiring!

By the way these were all taken with Kodak portra 400

Film Fridays // I’m on a boat

film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film

I took these when we went out on a friend’s boat this past summer.  I didn’t want to haul my Mamiya a.k.a “The Brick” onto the boat so my ancient 35mm Pentax tagged along. Nothing ground breaking here but I thought it would be fun to also share these amazing water photos by Deb Schwedhelm, a photographer I follow. How she turns a simple boating trip into a magical work of art is beyond me. Some people just have so much talent it almost hurts…know what I mean?  Check out her work if you’ve never seen it. Good stuff!

Film Fridays // the little rose bush that could

film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film

Shamefully, I admit that after 2 yrs of living in our house we have done a big fat *zero* to the outside landscaping. In fact we’ve lost 2 trees since moving in! Shameful. I know. Our house was built in 1960 and we have worked tirelessly on the inside fixing it up. Project, after endless project. So the curb appeal has taken a back seat. (And I’m sure our neighbors love us for it.) But this amazing little rose bush is one determined bush! After getting watered only a handful of times during the summer drought, it bloomed these amazing lavender pink roses. It almost makes me feel guilty for all my neglect…almost. Hey, I love plants but there’s only so much one person can do, ya know? Here’s to getting my landscaping on next year!

Film Fridays // colorado dreaming

film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film

Going through some of the film scans from Kim + Gregg’s wedding, I came across these two that Sean and I took of each other, and I thought, “you know, I could totally see myself living in Colorado.” I don’t feel that way about many places that I visit. I love traveling but I love coming home even more.  Plus I think Texas is pretty awesome. But I didn’t want to leave Colorado. I felt very close to nature and I kept envisioning my kids there. Hiking and camping in the summer, skiing in the winter. I might be wrong but it seems like life would be very nature focused there.  With so much beauty in your face it would be hard to avoid! Well, whos knows! maybe one day.

and a few more film scans from the wedding. This little flower girl the sweetest kid ever!
