film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film

I’m still working on the digital images from my family MINI SESSIONS but I HAD to share some of the film I just got back. I took mostly digital that day but snuck in a bit of film and EEEP! I do love them. I am just so crazy-obsessed-I-need-film-rehab in love with how film looks!  It’s so amazing and perfectly imperfect. The color, the texture, the depth, the richness, no blown highlights, creamy skin. It’s all there and I didn’t even have to do anything to it.

Taking my Mamyia out to the mini sessions definitely planted the seed that I want to start photographing ALL my families with film. I was (still am) nervous to shoot little ones with medium format. They are fast and it is slow and with each roll I get 15 shots. That’s it. With digital I can pop off 10-15 shots of the same pose until I have a good one. I do think it’s possible though. One of my biggest film heroes, Jonathan Canlas , takes the most amazing family photos with children of all ages on medium format. This guy has super natural abilities, though. So I’m not saying I’ll come even close to his talent, just that it’s possible. Check him out if you’ve never heard of him. His family work is inspiring!

By the way these were all taken with Kodak portra 400
